Paradoxically, the success of certification programs such as LEED can sometimes alienate designers who give long thought to design that respects the environment. Because not everything can be reduced to checks on a scorecard, or a list of features to include or rules to follow.
LEED is also a business, and some property owners, even those with an environmental conscience, don’t want to play that game. The idea is to go beyond the simple application of a recipe, to explore ways in which we can reduce our energy and resource consumption. Even if this means stepping outside of the design framework itself to offer your clients alternative solutions that will allow them to improve the sustainable development aspect of a project.
